Seascapes

Seascapes are one of my favorite subjects. This is an introduction to just a little of my thinking as I line up a shot as well as to my first Seascapes album.
Sunrise on the Belmar Fishing Pier

The sea has captured mankind’s imagination for time untold. It is vast, beautiful, calm, scary. It provides food, recreation, calming sound … so many things. The sea provides among the best places to view sunrise, sunset and storms.

When trying to capture sunrise or sunset the timing is vastly easier than in the other places where the horizon is not so perfectly flat. Many web sites and apps are available to tell you exactly when the sun will rise and set for exactly where you are standing.

There are other decisions though. Would I like the waves to be vibrant and active as in the top photo or a longer exposure, smoothing the water to a glassy texture and blurring any clouds?

Rude Woman walks right into my sunrise on the beach composition

If I want a foreground then what? Sand, rocks, a boat, a person? All of the above? Or, as in this case, perhaps you have your tripod set up, the composition is what you want, a boat is even in the sunbeam and a rude woman decides to walk right in front of you for her shot so you just make the best of the situation. 😁

Note that if I am not using a drone then I pretty much take all of my sunrise and sunset photos set up on a tripod.
